Add a patient, certified instructor like Hamza, and you have the recipe for the most unforgettable holiday of your life.
The Best Beginner Surf Spots at Taghazout
La Source, One of our favourite beginner spots on this coastline. Sandy bottom, mellow breaking waves, safe entry and exit. The waves here are forgiving and consistent, perfect for practising your pop-up and riding your first green waves.
Banana Beach (K11 / K12), In Aourir, Banana Beach refers to the K11 and K12 peaks at Aourir Beach (Google Maps). K-numbers indicate approximate distance from Agadir. This is the walkable beginner area from our surf house, with true beginners usually best on K11 (left side/start of the beach), while K12 is better for beginner–intermediate surfers. Banana Point is separate and more advanced.
Hash Point (intermediate), Once you've mastered the basics, Hash Point is the natural next step. A consistent right-hander with longer rides that will test your wave selection and improve your surfing dramatically.
What to Expect from Your First Surf Lesson
Many first-time surfers worry that they're not fit enough, young enough, or athletic enough to learn. The truth is: surfing is for everyone. At Surf Treasure Morocco, we've taught complete beginners ranging from 8 to 70 years old. Our approach is patient, encouraging, and fun. Here's what your first lesson looks like:
Beach Theory (30 min)
Hamza introduces you to surfboard parts, ocean awareness, wave reading, and the correct paddling and pop-up technique on the sand. You'll practice the pop-up motion until it feels natural before entering the water.
Whitewash Practice (45 min)
You'll start in the whitewater (broken waves) where conditions are calm and predictable. This is where you'll find your balance and ride your first waves on a large, stable soft-top surfboard.
Green Waves (45 min)
Once you're comfortable in the whitewash, Hamza guides you to catch your first unbroken (green) waves. The feeling of gliding down the face of a real wave for the first time is unforgettable.
Debrief & Surf Analysis
After the lesson, Hamza provides personalised feedback on your technique, using video footage from the session when available. You'll know exactly what to focus on in your next lesson.
Equipment for Beginners
All surf equipment is included in our packages. As a beginner, you'll use a large foam soft-top surfboard (8–9 feet) which provides maximum stability and buoyancy. You'll also be given a wetsuit appropriate for the season , a 3/2mm suit in winter months, and a 2/2mm shorty in summer. Rash guards and surf wax are also provided. You don't need to bring anything except your enthusiasm!
Surf Safety for Beginners at Taghazout
Safety is our top priority. Before entering the water, Hamza covers ocean safety: how to identify rip currents, how to fall safely off your board, surf etiquette (right of way rules), and how to read wave patterns. Our beginner sessions always take place on beaches with lifeguards and manageable conditions. Instructor Hamza is in the water with you at all times during lessons, ensuring you are always safe and supported.
Best Time for Beginner Surf in Taghazout
For complete beginners, the best time to visit Taghazout is May to September. During these months, the Atlantic swell is smaller and more consistent , perfect for learning. The water temperature is warm (22–26°C), the weather is sunny (25–35°C), and the beginner beaches are at their most welcoming. That said, Taghazout has great beginner conditions year-round, and we always find suitable spots even in the bigger winter swells.
Progression: From Zero to Riding Waves in One Week
Our typical beginner guests go from never having surfed to confidently riding green waves within 3–5 days. With daily lessons and guiding sessions, your progress is rapid. By the end of a one-week stay, most beginners can paddle out independently, select waves, and ride them with good control. It's one of the most satisfying skill progressions you'll experience in any sport.
